Breast Reduction by a Dentist?
As unbelievable as it sounds, state laws allow any licensed physician to call themselves “cosmetic” or “plastic surgeons,” even if they do not have training as a surgeon! If a doctor is wearing a white coat, it does not mean he/she is qualified; this is referred to as “white coat deception.”
There are numerous incidents of botched plastic surgery cases by unqualified doctors. See for yourself and Google “botched breast reduction” and you will see multiple horror stories of women who ended up with; misshaped breasts, horrific scars, nipple loss, infection and more. Fox News reported a few years ago about a dentist from Oregon, who was sued for a disfiguring breast reduction done on a 15 year old girl.
Choosing Your Breast Reduction surgeon
Dr. Delgado states that this can be avoided if you do your homework when choosing your surgeon. In order to avoid a doctor who advertises as a “plastic surgeon” ask this specific question, “is the doctor Board Certified in Plastic Surgery?” If you feel uncomfortable asking, you can go online to the website for American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and go to “find a Plastic Surgeon.” All plastic surgeons that are members are Board Certified. Another thing to check online is your state medical board, see if there are any complaints or lawsuits filed.
Board Certified Plastic Surgeons have had extensive training and must complete a minimum of 5 years of surgical training after medical school. They must complete a residency program in plastic surgery which gives them “in-depth” training of the face and body.
Safety for the Breast Reduction Patient
Plastic surgeons are trained to handle all types of emergencies including; circulation, ventilation, electrolyte balance, etc., which are all critical to the safety of the patient.
